Clothing with UPF Protection
UPF stands for "Ultraviolet Protection Factor" and basically it's a numerical rating given to clothing to indicate how effectively the fabric blocks UV radiation. Our everyday clothing has about a UPF of 5. However, there are several brands that make fashionable clothes that contain UPF 50, so you don't have to sacrifice your style in the name of sun protection. They make everything from swimsuits and simple tees to dresses and pants.
If you don't want to buy all new clothes, don't worry there is another option. They also make a wash in sun protection called Sunguard that allows you to add UPF protection to your already existing clothing. It's under $5 and adds UPF 30 to your everyday clothing, protecting you for 20 future washes.
Wide Brim Hat
Hat's are a wonderful, and chic way to shield your face from the sun and give you added protection. The wider the brim the more protection you will get. They make hats at all different price points, I suggest investing in one or two good quality neutral hats. That way they will last and go with any outfit.
Your eyes also need protection from the sun. The right sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, cancer, and other eye conditions. In order to protect as much of the delicate skin around your eyes as possible, go for a pair with larger lenses or a style that wraps around. Similar to hats, sunglasses come at all different price points but I suggest investing in at least one really good quality pair.
Makeup with SPF
In addition to your basic sunscreen, there are now a ton of great makeup products available that give you added protection from the sun. I myself, love to use a CC Cream that gives sheer coverage while shielding out those damaging rays. There are also a lot of great tinted moisturizers, powders, and tinted lip products with SPF to protect the delicate skin on your lips. Just try to stay away from products that contain a chemical sunscreen that can cause premature aging and hormone disruption.
