It's finally May and Kentucky Derby week! Mint juleps are perfect drink to serve if you're having a derby party or just watching it yourself at home. They're also great to enjoy anytime in the warmer months. Some of the recipes get pretty complicated so I put together a simple and easy one that you can make quickly. This recipe serves one.
2 oz bourbon
.5 oz simple syrup
10-15 fresh mint leaves + more for garnish
Lots of crushed ice
Place 10-15 fresh mint leaves in the bottom of a glass and add .5 oz of simple syrup. Muddle the mint around in the simple syrup. You want to bruise the leaves so they release the oils and flavor.
Add 2 oz of bourbon. I used Woodford Reserve because it is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, but feel free to use whatever you like.
Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice and stir gently. You want to mix the simple syrup, mint flavor and bourbon together but don't want the leaves floating around in the glass. I used the Vita-mix to make the crushed ice but you could buy it crushed or use a fridge dispenser if you have one.
Fill the rest of the way with crushed ice and top with lots of fresh mint. Enjoy responsibly!
